Top Family Activities To Do In Edinburgh This Summer

Finding things to do in Edinburgh during the summer holidays couldn't be easier, a city offering a plethora of activities that will keep kids entertained. Whether you are exploring the outdoors or enjoying one of the many festivals, there is something for everyone. Here are some top family friendly activities tips. 

Edinburgh Zoo 
For families, Edinburgh Zoo is a wonderful destination. It is home to over 2.500 animals from around the world, including the recent addition, a pygmy hippo calf called Haggis! Budding Zoologists should sign up to their summer school, running 30 June to 1 August 2025. Through a series of exciting activities such as animal handling, zoo trails and games, the students will learn about different animals, nature and world cultures.

Dalkeith Country Park 
Spread out over 1000 acres, Dalkeith Country Park is a great place for an exceptional day out during the summer. Located a few miles outside of Edinburgh’s city centre in Midlothian, the park has activities for all ages. Explore the stunning scenery on one of the many marked trails. Book tickets for one of the two daily sessions at Fort Douglas Adventure Playground where you will find adventure on slides, turreted treehouses, zip lines, rope bridges and climbing walls. To get your adrenaline pumping, why not visit Go Ape where adventurers can zipline over the River Esk from the exciting treetop trails. 

Edinburgh Fringe Festival 
Running from 1-25 August 2025, Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a wonderful celebration of theatre, comedy, dance, and more. Many events offer free admission, and there are numerous shows designed specifically for families. The brochure also includes age recommendations for each performance.



Craigies Farm

Located in South Queensferry, Craigies Farm is a charming spot for families to spend their summer days. The farm provides a 'Pick Your Own' experience, allowing visitors to gather fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries and cherries. Book to visit Little Farmers, Craigies adventure farm park, where children can meet animals and have fun in the indoor play barn and outdoor yard. 

The Royal Yacht Britannia 
Come aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia and follow in the footsteps of Royalty with a tour of this unique ship. Spot the cuddly corgis as you tour Britannia’s five decks. Discover what life was like at sea for the Royal Family and crew of Royal Yachtsmen by exploring the State Apartments, the Crew’s Quarters, and the Engine Room, with a complimentary audio guide, available in over 30 languages including an English children’s version. Why not enjoy a scrumptious slice of cake or some ice cream in the Royal Deck Tearoom where you can relax and enjoy the picturesque views over the Firth of Forth.
